استهدفت هذه الدراسة التعرف على الاختيار الزواجي في الثقافتين الكويتية والأمريكية، وذلك من حيث أهمية حرية الاختيار الزواجي ومعاييره، والصعوبات المدركة (Perceived difficulties) التي تقلل من حرية الاختيار الزواجي، وكذلك دور الصدفة في هذا الاختيار. أجريت الدراسة على عينة قوامها 733 مفردة، جميعهم من الشباب في مرحلة التعليم الجامعي من تخصصات مختلفة، وتتوزع بين الكويتيين بواقع 368مفردة، أي ما يعادل 50.2% وجميعهم من الطلاب الدارسين بجامعة الكويت، والشباب الأمريكيين بواقع 365 مفردة بما يعادل 49.8 وجميعهم من الطلاب الدارسين بجامعة سان دييجو بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. استخدمت الدراسة مقياسا تم إعداده بما يتفق مع موضوع الدراسة وأهدافها، كما تم التأكد من صدقه وثباته. وقد تم جمع البيانات من خلال المقابلات المباشرة مع المفحوصين وفق ضوابط محددة، ومن ثم عولجت البيانات حسب خطة إحصائية تقابل أهداف الدراسة. كشفت الدراسة عن فروق جوهرية بين عينة الشباب الكويتيين وعينة الشباب الأمريكيين من حيث أبعاد الاختيار الزواجي الأربعة التي تم بحثها (أهمية حرية الاختيار، معايير الاختيار، دور الصدفة في الاختيار، الصعوبات المدركة)، وهناك في الوقت نفسه فروق بين المجموعات الفرعية داخل عينة، وإن كانت هناك في الوقت نفسه بعض الجوانب المشتركة. وفيما يخص أهمية حرية الاختيار، كشفت الدراسة عن أن الشباب الكويتيين والشباب الأمريكيين يعطون قيمة عالية لتلك الحرية، لكن العينة الأمريكية هي أكثر تعبيرا عن أهمية حرية الاختيار الزواجي مقارنة بالعينة الكويتية. وعلى مستوى العينة الكويتية -يعطي الذكور أهمية أعلى لحرية الاختيار الزواجي مقارنة بالإناث، أما في العينة الأمريكية فلا توجد فروق بين الجنسين. وفي إطار أهمية معايير الاختيار الزواجي عبرت العينة الكويتية عن استجابات متحفظة (منخفضة) بشأن الحب والتجارب العاطفية السابقة وذلك مقارنة بالعينة الأمريكية التي عبرت عن استجابات متحررة (عالية) بشأن هذه المسائل. وفيما يتعلق بدور الصدفة في الاختيار الزواجي كشفت الدراسة عن انخفاض القيمة الكمية لاستجابات العينة الكويتية مقارنة بالعينة الأمريكية، هذا الانخفاض يعكس التفكير المقيد بالتقاليد، أو المتحفظ، والذي يصعب معه الإقدام على خطوات غير محسوبة بشأن مسألة مصيرية كالزواج. وفي إطار الصعوبات المدركة بشأن الاختيار الزواجي كشفت الدراسة عن أن التقاليد العائلية، وكذلك صعوبة القرار في حد ذاته ترتفع لدى العينة الكويتية مقارنة بالعينة الأمريكية. في ضوء تلك النتائج تبدو ضرورة توعية الشباب الكويتيين بأهمية التمسك بالقيم والعادات الكويتية الأصيلة في الاختيار الزواجي، وإذا كانت قيمة الثراء المالي تحتل الترتيب الأول ضمن معايير هذا الاختيار حسب مدركات العينة الكويتية (وليس العينة الأمريكية)، فإن هناك ضرورة لتوعية الشباب الكويتيين بأن هناك قيما أخرى تتراجع أمامها القيم المادية، هذه القيم "الأخرى" يأتي في مقدمتها الدين والالتزام تجاه الزواج والأسرة.
This study aimed to define the marital choice in the Kuwaiti and American culture, in terms of the importance of the freedom of the marital choice and the relevant criteria, as well as the perceived difficulties facing marital choice and the role of coincidence in this experience. A valid and reliable questionnaire was administrated to a sample of 733 university students of different majors, of which 368 were Kuwaiti students in the Kuwait University and 365 who were students in San Diego University, in the United States. Results showed significant differences between the Kuwaiti sample and the American one in terms of the four marital choice dimensions that were investigated (the importance of freedom of marital choice, the choosing criteria, the role of coincidence in choosing, the difficulties perceived). At the same time, there are significant differences among groups of each sample, even if there are some common aspects. Concerning the importance of freedom of marital choice, the study showed that Kuwaiti youth and American youth give a high value to that freedom; however, the American sample is more expressive of the importance of freedom of marital choice in comparison with the Kuwaiti sample. In the Kuwaiti sample - the males give more importance to the freedom of marital choice in comparison with the females, as for the American sample, there are no differences between the two genders. Concerning the criteria of marital choice, the Kuwaiti sample expressed relatively conservativeness about love and previous sexual relationships in comparison with the American sample that expressed free answers about these issues. Concerning the role of coincidence in the marital choice, the results showed a low quantitative value in the answers of the Kuwaiti sample in comparison with the American one. This result reflects the way of thinking that is bound by traditions or conservativeness, and which makes it difficult to take unplanned action regarding marriage as a decisive matter. Concerning the perceived difficulties facing the marital choice, results showed that the family traditions as well as the difficulty of decision making itself are highly considered in the Kuwaiti sample in comparison with the American one. In view of these results, the Kuwaiti youth have to be aware of the importance of sticking to the Kuwaiti original traditions and customs, in relation with the marital choice. It was noted that the Kuwaiti sample gave a high value to money as a criterion of marriage selection in comparison to the American sample. It is necessary to make Kuwaiti youth aware of other values that reduce the material ones. These "other" values are first and foremost religion and the commitment towards marriage and the family.
