George Orwell's essay depicts a gloomy picture of Colonial Marrakech. The reader is invited to visit different parts of the city and to meet its people in different contexts. Orwell constructs various social pictures through which he levels strong criticism against the coloniser. The poverty of the locals, the squalor of the place, the misery of the Jews are examples of the areas Orwell has exposed to criticism. Orwell's concentration on the coloniser as the main target of criticism has blinded him to the still existing human life among the indigenous who become invisible to him. Like most travel writers, Orwell has, to a certain extent, reproduced a different version of the people and their place. The notion of the elsewhere and the other has been impacted by the author's self-representation. The 'elsewhere' and the 'other' as produced by Orwell fails to comply with the real picture of reality to suit his internal eye where the 'self interferes with the reality of the 'other'. Orwell's blindness to the stream of human life among the locals, reduces his writing to a mere morality travel text embedded with indignation, disgust and hatred of the coloniser and the atrocities he has inflicted upon the indigenous.
