In May 1994, the TEI issued its Guidelines for the Encoding and Interchange of Machine-Readable Texts, which provide standardized encoding conventions for a large range of text types and features relevant for a broad range of applications. However, the development of the TEI guidelines is on-going; it is necessary to apply the existing mechanisms to more and different texts in different languages, and presenting different encoding problems. There remains technical work to be done in simplifying and rationalizing some of the exisiting features, and further tag set development is required in some areas. Most importantly, the guidelines need to be validated as they are used by projects throughout the world. The TEI is developing its collaborative relationships with such projects to facilitate the validation and development of guidelines. Given the potential challenges of encoding texts in the African languages, it will be important to seek and establish collaborative efforts with projects encoding language resources in these languages.
