This paper presents Arabic WordNet project which aims at constructing a wordnet for Standard Arabic. The main goal of the project is to construct a freely available lexical resource for Arabic. A resource that follows the design and the methodology of the extensively used Princeton WordNet for English. Arabic WordNet will be mapped onto Princeton WordNet and onto dozens of other wordnets that are already mapped or will be mapped onto Princeton WordNet, ensuring accurate translation on the lexical level across many languages. The mapping between Arabic WordNet and SUMO (Suggested Upper Merged Ontology) will result in a powerful knowledge base that can be used for more efficient applications in Natural Language Processing and Understanding. |
