English abounds in equivalents for the Arabic intensifiers and However, Arab translators and language students tend to overuse the English synonyms very and completely (and to a lesser extent synonyms such as profoundly, deeply, totally and fully) in their texts while other possible intensification tools are largely overlooked or misused. But the abundance of English equivalents typically found in thesauri, monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and online corpora shows a complex picture; intensifiers listed as synonyms display semantic and collocationl distinctions; some have unique collocations, others operate under different sets of semantic restrictions while others still may combine though not freely. An analysis of intensification will also demonstrate that it is realizable by a host of lexical expressions which neither grammarians nor lexicographers have paid much attention to. Such expressions include synonymous pairings, open-class adverbs, single English words, similes and idiomatic expressions. It is concluded that a better understanding of this phenomenon will serve to enhance the quality of English target texts and dictionary senses by bringing the level of English used therein to a level comparable to that of native speakers.
