This study investigates the effect(s) of powerpoint presentations (PPTPs) projecting speakers’ speeches, simultaneously with the speakers’ oral delivery of the same message, on the performance of four groups of consecutive and simultaneous interpreters in four different experimental designs: 1) simultaneous interpreting of powerpoint-supported speeches (PPTSSs), 2) consecutive interpreting of powerpoint-supported speeches (CIPPTSSs), 3) simultaneous interpreting of non-powerpoint-supported speeches (SINPPTSSs), and consecutive interpreting of non-poerpoint- supported speeches (CINPPTSSs). Although the use of technology may be commended for many teaching and public speaking activities, the results obtained from this small scale study suggest that powerpoint presentations (PPTPs) distract more than help. The slide text overrides the speaker’s oral message and captures all of the interpreter’s attention resulting in lower interpretation quality.
