Technical translation has played a crucial role in the history of scientific ideas. This is no more so than in the Arab medieval culture, when one of the reasons for the emergence of translation as a medium of knowledge transmission was technical translation. Yet, translation scholars have traditionally turned to literary texts in the development of theories and empirical analyses of translation, ignoring directly or indirectly the contributions of technical translation to the advancement of translation traditions and their associated cultures. The aim of this article is to explore the role of technical translation in the formation of Arab culture and translation in medieval times. It examines the state and status medieval Arabic technical translation enjoyed as a means of communicating and diffusing sciences and thus serving as the catalyst for the development of a unique Arab cultural environment.
