The present paper examines the function of WA and FA in Standard Arabic within the Metaoperational Theory. It discusses the semantic and the discursive invariant that underlies the surface meanings of these connectives in context. It also demonstrates that behind their relational role, these connectives are considered as metaoperators which signal the intention of communication of the utterer when having recourse to a specific connective in building discourse. The choice of one of them depends strongly on the discursive strategy of the utterer and the context. The most sensible way to provide a coherent and satisfactory explanation to how these connectives work is to examine them in authentic context rather than in separated sentences.
