المستخلص: The present paper deals with the development of the commercial re¬lations between the Sudan and the neighboring countries. The exam¬ined period analyzes the relations between the Funj Sultanate and the Ethiopian States during which there were a lot of improvements in trade infrastructure occurred in which roads paving and commercial caravans expanded. Those improvements played an important role in refining relations between the two regions. The paper elucidates some of the commercial codes dominant dur¬ing that time and how they played an important role. Moreover, the positive affecting factors and the code of sovereignty between the two regions are analyzed. The infiltration of European merchants into the region and the establishment of commercial centers and points are also analyzed. The infiltration of the Catholic missions into the region is also documented. The most important is the examination of the methodology of barter ship exhibited here, where the natives did not deal with coins or monetary documents. Barter depended mostly on the commodities, es¬pecially in borders and coastal areas of the Red Sea.
