المستخلص: Sudan Railways was the main freight and passenger carrier for more than 70 years carrying around 85% of freight traffic and up to 3 million passengers annually in the country. Sudan Railways decline started mid 1970s and brought its share at present to less than 10% of freight traffic and a negligible share in passenger traffic in the country. Using historical data, this article attempts to analyze the sequence and factors of the rail decline. The railways in Sudan were a combination of integrated modes of rail, river and port. Breaking that combination into separate entities deprived the country from a national multimodal system. Favorable policies to road development have lead to an unbalanced modal system where rail and river shares fall below 10% of traffic leaving the bulk of freight and passenger traffic to road transport. Road development came at a crucial time where rail fragile transport system fell below transport demand. It has to be remembered that rail was behind the success and extension of agriculture in Sudan including the Gezira plantation while road should be remembered for its contribution in oil exploration and production and for its share in more than 90% of imports and export traffic and over more than 25 million passenger trips annually. This article attempts to explore ways of improving rail function and reconciling its status in the present competitive market.
