Poetry has been the voice of people ever since the dawn of history. It describes their experiences in all walks of human life. A poem, for instance, could be an instrument for social change, especially when it is a piece of artistic beauty. One of the most recurrent issues in American poetry is probably slavery. The American experience with all its implications has fostered this concern.. The African Americans have been suffering from inequality, lack of freedom and social prejudice for centuries. Their experience is worth studying. The present study investigates Langston Hughes’ poetry and his quest for personal identity as well as the black Africans’ aspiration for freedom within the large context of the American dream. The primary objective of the study is to see whether Hughes’ poems produced the desired effect or not. This is achieved through discussion, analysis and interpretations of these poems. The study’s findings can be summed up in the following points: 1.Hughes’ poetry played a significant role in shaping the Afro -Americans’ spirit of solidarity and fighting for freedom and equality. 2.Hughes’ poems are memorable because they address humanity and call for universally - accepted values. 3.Further studies of Hughes’ poetry are needed so as to foster new ideas and insights into the artistic quality of the Afro - Americans’ writings after the civil war.
لقد عانى السود في أمريكا لقرون عديدة من الكبت والتمييز والظلم ولذلك فإن تجربتهم جديرة بالدراسة والوقوف عندها. تتناول هذه الدراسة أشعار لانجستون هيوز بتركيز خاص على الهوية وأحلام الأمريكان السود بالحرية في إطار الحلم الأمريكي. والهدف الرئيسي من الدراسة يتمثل في بحث مدى فاعلية وتأثير هذه القصائد. يتحقق ذلك من خلال مناقشة وتحليل وتفسير هذه القصائد. لعل واحدا من أكثر المواضيع تناولا في الشعر الأمريكي هو العبودية كواحدة من إفرازات التجربة الأمريكية وبإمكان القصيدة أن تصبح أداة للتغيير الاجتماعي خاصة عندما تكون قطعة أدبية تمتاز بالسحر والجمال. فالشعر منذ فجر التاريخ هو صوت الشعوب والمعبر عن تجاربها في كل مفترقات الحياة ودوريها العريضة. أما نتائج الدراسة فيمكن تلخيصها في الاتي: 1. لعبت أشعار هيوز دورا مؤثرا في تشكيل الروح القتالية لدى السود وتوحدهم من أجل الحرية والمساواة. 2. ظلت أشعار هيوز حاضرة ه الذاكرة لأنها تخاطب الضمير الإنساني أجمع وتدعو إلى سيادة قيم فاضلة متعارف عليها. 3. برزت الحاجة إلى دراسة أشعار هيوز لأنها تعطى أفكار جديدة وروى ثاقبة توضح جمال وتفرد إبداعات الأمريكيين السود خاصة في فترة ما بعد الحرب الأهلية في أمريكا.
