Published in 1978, Edward Said’s book Orientalism is still considered one of the primary references, in particular in the fields of comparative literature, cultural theories like Post-colonialism and Middle Eastern studies. Orientalism was translated into almost 36 languages. Kamal Abu Deeb, a distinguished Arab critic and literary figure, undertook the first Arabic translation in 1981. This paper will analyze Abu Deep’s translation of the first chapter of Orientalism titled ‘Knowing the Orient’ on different linguistic and pragmatic levels based on a framework includes elements from theories by Mona Baker, Julian House and other theorists of translation studies and quality assessment. It will also attempt to offer a suggested translation of the article Where East and West Meet by the Arab-American intellectual Ameen Rihani. By including both practical and theoretical elements, the aim of this study is to attract more attention to the significance of translating and revisiting translations of the work of key intellectuals of western as well as Arab background to the field of translation studies and text analysis. |
