المستخلص: Sudanity’ is a new term for an aesthetic current which appeared in the Sudan. It meant to project the distinguished façade of the Sudan in terms of its environment, nature, customs and distinctive character in order for these to serve as sources of inspiration, from which an innovative Sudanese draws his excellence in literature, fine art, sculpture, architecture and music. However, this current was stronger in the realm of literature (both poetry and prose) than in any other field. In this article, the author tried to trace this aesthetic current since its beginning in the critical works of the Sudanese pioneer critic, Hamza Al-Malik Tambal (his vision on it and early call for it). The paper also explored the reaction of the different Sudanese intellectuals to this new current. These include the adherents of the old literary doctrine who resisted Tambal’s call, such as the poets Al-Abbasi and Abdalla Abdel Rahman, on the one hand, and the modernists who supported the call, such as Al-Mahgoub, Al-Magzoub and Mohamed Mohamed Ali, on the other hand. The author tried also to clarify the motives behind the adoption of this current by the latter group.
