La tâche à laquelle s’est attelée la présente étude est d’étudier le suicide de la reine fondatrice de Carthage dans l’œuvre de Justin. Habité par des soucis différents par rapport à son modèle le récit de l’abréviateur de Trogue Pompé a pris logiquement avec le temps une teinte profondément romaine. Toutefois, des connotations grecques sont toujours perceptibles car l’auteur de l’œuvre originel¬le, puisant la matière de sa narration essentiellement chez des auteurs grecs, voulait faire connaître au public latin « l’histoire d’un monde qui allait devenir romain du point de vue des non Romains ». Trois thèmes ont retenu notre attention le mode de suicide d’Elissa, une mission civilisatrice vouée à l’échec et les connotations grecques de l’héroïsation de la reine fondatrice après sa mort.
This study aims at investigating the suicide of the founder - queen of Carthage in the works of Justin.Haunted by different concerns in relation to its model, the account of the abbreviator of Trogus Pompeius has logically taken, in the course of time, a profoundly Roman tinge. Yet, Greek connotations are still distinguishable in the author of the original book, drawing material for his narration essentially from other Greek authors, he wanted to introduce the Latin public to “ the history of a world which had become Roman from the point of view of the non- Romans”. Three themes took hold of our attention ; the suicide method of Elissa, a civilizing mission which was doomed to failure, and the Greek connotations of the heroic status of the founder-queen after her death.
