يتناول هذا البحث نماذج من اختيارات ابن عطية الترجيحية من تفسيره المحرر الوجيز عرضاً ودراسة – دراسة تطبيقية على قصة عاد وثمود من سورة هود, عدة أهداف منها: التعريف بمدى أهمية الترجيح عند المفسرين, وهو علم يعين على استخراج القواعد والضوابط التي يعرف بها الصواب في تفسير كتاب الله, وإبراز شخصية ابن عطية وجهوده ومكانته, خاصة أنه أحد أئمة التفسير, وبيان الآراء والترجيحات التي انتصر لها الإمام ابن عطية. باعتبار أن الاستقراء والتتبع مستنبط من القرآن الكريم. وإعطاء دارس هذا النوع من الموضوعات قدرة قوية على نقد أقوال المفسرين وفهمها ومناقشتها والترجيح بينها, بالإضافة إلى الملكة التفسيرية التي يكتسبها, ولأن قيمة الموضوع التفسيرية تتعلق بمعرفة الراجح من الأقوال في تفسير القرآن, وهذا البحث يعد طريقا لتدبر القرآن الكريم وفهم معانيه وأحكامه. ومن أهداف البحث الرغبة في خدمة القرآن الكريم؛ وسلكت فيه المنهج الاستقرائي فجمعت ما يتعلق بسيرة ابن عطية, وجمع ترجيحاته في سورة هـــود المتعلقة بقصة قوم هود وصالح, بذكر من وافق ابن عطية من المفسرين, ومن خالفه, واستعراض أدلة كل فريق في المسألة, ثم ذكر النتيجة التي تم التوصل إليها, وتوثيق المادة العلمية, وشرح غريب الألفاظ والمصطلحات, والتعريف بالأعلام.
