Typically learners/translators' lexical competence is based on isolated words. These words learners/translators cannot assemble with ease in order to make sentences. Most often they base the syntactic structure of L2 on the one they know on L1. This creates a problem, especially with collocations and formulaic expressions. In response to ever-increasing demands for a more systemic and efficient approach to SLL, language use and translation, there has grown an urgent need to review the usefulness of our present day dictionaries as tools and the use made of them in L1 and translation. This paper will look at two major perspectives concerning the use of bilingual dictionaries (BD) - the learner perspective (LP) and the translator perspective (TP). It will discuss the results of a questionnaire conducted among fifteen students enrolled in the BA programme in the Department of English, University of Aden.
