Compliment responses )CR) and other politeness formulae have been one of the most intriguing topics in linguistics in the last forty years. The research literature abounds with a large number of studies published on this topic since the early 1970s, by researchers from subfields of linguistics (e.g. pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics). With this in mind, the major purpose of this paper is to shed light on the pragmatic significance of compliments and compliment responses’ strategies as they are used by some major university students in The New Valley Faculty of education, Assiut university , Egypt The paper will focus on their ability to respond to compliments appropriately according to the norms of the native speakers of English, from a sociolinguistic point of view. It also seeks to elicit the conventions governing the use of compliment responses as sociolinguistic and pragmatic phenomena. Moreover, this paper tries to answer the following questions: a) What are the main compliment responses strategies used among the subjects of this study in some of their conversational situation? b) What are the conventions which govern the use of compliment responses as a sociolinguistic and pragmatic phenomenon in the area in question? c) Do the learners of English as a second language in this area respond to and perceive compliments appropriately in English in their everyday speeches and language environments? d) whether or not the participants of the current study respond to compliments in English appropriately or do they follow their first language norms?
