المستخلص: This paper investigates the sources of growth in the Egyptian economy at the macro level during 1971-2011, with the aim of uncovering the prospects for future growth in Egypt. It employs the growth accounting framework assuming constant returns to scale and that a is equal to 0.5. The physical capital stock data are based on physical capital stock estimates by Berlemann and Wesselhoft (2012). The results of growth accounting exercise reveal that physical capital accumulation was the major source of growth in real GDP during the period under study along with a limited role for labor input, whereas total factor productivity growth (TFPG) played a crucial role in these sub-periods that were characterized by a fall in the growth of physical capital stock. The paper concludes, therefore, that strong and sustainable growth in the future will require physical capital accumulation but with higher efficiency; that is, physical capital accumulation coupled with higher TFPG and skilled labor.
