This paper investigates the use of tense and person in Free Indirect Style, or Free Indirect Discourse in narrative with examples taken from (Egyptian) Arabic fiction for illustration. Concepts such as time and person in narrative are briefly touched on to see how narrators and writers or critics use the two (literary and linguistic) types of tense (e.g. absolute and relative) and variations of person (e.g. Speaker vs. Sayer/ Cognizant and Narrator vs. Addressee with their possible deictic centers) to create narratorial effect in the formation and use of free indirect speech. Examples from English narrative are presented as appropriate to study the use of FID in English, and see how tense and person are used in Arabic narrative and illustrate the effect this use may have. Two techniques (Gennette's first person translation hypothesis and Kaplan's indexicals) are employed. The paper concludes by giving a brief account of person (speaker/ addressee) and tense (and how it may correspond to time) indexicals in narrative FID. |
