This paper attempts a critical discourse analysis of Barack Obama’s election victory speech which he delivered at Grant Park in Chicago on 4 November 2008. Following Fairclough (1995a, 1995b, 2003), Fowler et al. (1979), and Van Dijk (2000a, 2001, 2003), the method of analysis is critical in type and it challenges the speech against a number of criteria drawn from structural, textual, functional, intertextual, lexical, rhetorical and register perspectives. Considered one of the most widely-watched and repeated political addresses in recent history, Obama’s victory speech is investigated according to certain linguistic and rhetorical tools.-that made, it a victory and a world-wide discourse.
