The objective of this paper is to examine the validity of the twin deficit hypothesis with respect to Egypt. The paper thus investigates the relationship between Egypt's budget and trade deficits on the basis on previous empirical work using cointegration analysis, error-correction modeling and Granger causality. The results of the study reveal a bi-directional causality relationship between the two deficits in the short and long runs probably with a somewhat stronger causality running from the trade deficit to the budget deficit. |
