المستخلص: This paper uses cross sectional data from non-financial companies listed in the Egyptian Stock Exchange to differentiate between the impacts of corporate governance mechanisms on firm performance in terms of profitability versus return ratios. For this study corporate governance mechanisms include board structure, ownership structure, and audit function mechanisms. Stepwise linear regression was used and results show that only performance in terms of stock market returns measured by Tobin’s Q and stock returns is affected by corporate governance mechanisms, specifically board structure and audit function mechanisms respectively. This paper also finds that only the size and type of industry have a significant relationship with the profitability performance, ROE and ROA respectively but no corporate governance mechanisms show any significant effect (at least directly) on firm profitability ratios.
