|b Friday and Sunday sermons are regular weekly occasions of meeting, which include as an essential part the delivery by a religious orator (imam or priest) of a sermon meant to influence the personal thought and conduct of the congregation and shape their individual outlook towards worldly affairs at the social, national and international levels. From a discourse perspective and as has been demonstrated in the literature, these sermons are rigidly constructed with each component governed by syntactic and semantic restrictions. This study aims at investigating the validity of such claims in that it aims at identifying these components together with their semantic contents and syntactic realizations and trying to find out the similarities, if any, between Arabic Friday and English Sunday sermons in this respect. The model of analysis adopted for this study is Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) model of discourse analysis. The data for analysis consist of six sermons; three of which are Arabic and the others are English. The choice of these sermons is made on the basis of similarity in theme.
