نجد في تراثنا الشعري الذي أبدعه الشعراء تجارب شعرية دارت مع الحياة الوجدانية والاجتماعية والسياسية عبرت عن هموم الناس، ومنها رثاء المدن ولاسيما بغداد مهد العلم والأدب، فلم تكن بغداد مجرد اسم لمدينة عربية، إنما هي المخزون الحضاري والتاريخي الذي أفرزته الحضارات الأشورية والأكدية والبابلية. فكان الاسم ولما يزل ذا دلالة تاريخية حضارية، والشاخص الثقافي الذي تدور حوله ثقافي العرب. ارتبطت بغداد بأذهان الناس، فهي يشار إليه بالبنان لما تحمله من مشاعر سكنت نفوس كثير منهم، فالأسى والشجن الذي طفا على سطح مشاعر الناس في بغداد كان يجسد حالة طبيعية من علاقة العشق بين الإنسان والمكان بكل ملامحه. فالحنين إلى بغداد هو حنين الروح إلى المكان، وحنين بغداد إلى الروح. غير أن الروح والمكان يمتزجان ويتخذان من بغداد رمزاً للنهوض وعودة الحياة فيها. غدت المدينة كياناً له معني ووجود في النفوس عامة ولاسيما الشعراء الذي عبروا عنها بصور صادقة وصفحات مشرقة تفيض حزناً وألماً تعبر عن صدق المعاناة، وقد وقع الاختيار علي شعر شمس الدين الكوفي لما يعبر شعره عن حال المدينة عندما يدخلها الغزاة ويفعلون ما يفعلون، فضلا عن ذلك أنها قصائد تعبر عن حقبة زمنية مهمة مرت بها الدولة العربية الإسلامية، ونهضة شعرية؛ لذلك عد شعره وثيقة تاريخية، ومصدراً مهماً من مصادر دراسة القرن السابع للهجرة، بكي فيه الدولة العباسية، والمدينة المنكوبة. زيادة علي ذلك أنه من أروع ما قيل في الشعر العربي في رثاء بغداد. لذا سنتناول شعره بالدراسة والتحليل لهذه المدينة الزاهية التي طمع الغزاة فيها، المدينة التي عرفت بعملها ومجدها ألا تستحق ذلك؟
