المستخلص: The study reported in this paper explores the demotivating factors that discourage Saudi students of the Preparatory Year Program (PYP) from learning the English language. It was conducted with 106 university low proficient EFL learners in the Deanship of Educational services, University of Qassim, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Quantitative analysis of findings from this study specified sixteen significant extrinsic demotivators affecting Saudi students’ EFL learning, on top of which came the “Entrance and Remedial course Examinations.” In addition, the theme “Experience of failure and test scores” was statistically verified as the primary source of demotivation dispiriting PYP Saudi students from learning the English Language prior to entering college. The results also showed measurable significant statistical differences among the five demotivating themes in their effect on PYP students’ English language learning. The study put forward that learners’ voices should be heard, and problematic aspects of classroom practices need to be addressed. The study provides a platform for further research to obtain information about the demotivation phenomenon based on a bigger sample at different levels of education to consider major and gender related variables.
