|b Out of the most fascinating aspects of words is that they perform different roles according to the different situations in which they occur; not “ that these words follow certain phonological, syntactic and lexical rules Native speakers of a language are more capable of applying these rules but also are more talented in how to break them. In breaking them stu¬dents learning a foreign language often find themselves at a fuss. This is more obvious in dealing with proverbs and idioms. Another obstacle is that students are often encountered with certain expressions whose constituents s provide no value in determining their meanings. This, however, probably could happen in one's native language where the ability to interpret the intended meaning becomes an issue of disagreement. Furthermore, students learning translation need a guide in how to deal with similar and dissimilar expressions containing such a vague meaning. This paper attempts to uncover certain dimensions of Libyan Arabic proverbs and / or idioms and their English equivalents. It is beyond the ability of the researcher to compare all or even most of the Libyan idioms. Such a task demands a team-work of specialists and other vital requirements thus, the paper sheds light on this important neglected area, which the researcher believes deserves more attention.
