The novel “The Fire” is one of the most important novels of the Algerian novelist Mohammed Dib and particularly at a stage of time when all pens were striving to awaken public national and international opinions, to bring their attention to the Algerian issue and its triumphant revolution. That is in the case where the novelist wrote upon the eve of the eruption of the glorious November revolution and it was tantamount to an announcement concerning the terrible situations, pains and tragedies which the Algerian people had become to live through during the oppressive French colonialism of Algeria; its usurpation over all of the rights and properties and its preventing Algerians from defending themselves, their nation or land.
The novel depicted many scenes and provided indications to the reader about what the Algerian people were living through and about the bad and hideous treatment which characterized the French colonialism. All of the tragedies, sufferings and persecutions which the Algerians suffered were a result of the indulgence and luxuriousness of the European settlers. The novelist focused incidents of his novel to the agricultural workers and what they had suffered as a result of the violation of their lands, farms and efforts, by those settlers who were coming from every direction.
To enable the identification of the images of France within the Mohammed Dib’s novel “The fire”, a gradual approach is taken across the images which are ordered according to the type of usurpation. It begins with the European settlers, then the French colonial authority or French government. That was where the settlers were representative of the land owners and employers, whilst the authority represented the police and gendarmerie units. The opinion of Mohammed Dib towards those was expressed upon the tongues of the agricultural workers and farmers, some of the women from the village, just as there are certain situations dealing with the opinions of some of those who were loyal to the authority and its agents.
Most of the images depicted in “The fire” go beyond the scope of the description of places and times to focus upon the French personalities, with the exception of two defined places, which were the houses of the settlers and the French prison. Outside of that, Algerian places and farms were the property of the agricultural workers. This abstract translated by Dar AlMandumah Inc. 2018
