|b Bilingualism in general, is a widespread phenomenon in the world. In fact, more than half the populations of the world practise two or more languages in different contexts. It is rather monolingualism which seems to be the exception. \ Algeria is one of the countries which has always witnessed the coexistence of different languages, and we may consider that today it is a bilingual society, with Algerian Arabic and some Berber dialects as the mother tongue and French as a second language. \ In this essay, I will try to examine bilingualism as it occurs in the Algerian society. Our aim is to analyze which language is more spoken by the Algerians (Algerian Arabic or French), so we have focused our research on a group of people trying to know the prominent language used. Tlemcen is the region which we have dealt with. \ In the first beginning pages, I have tried to seek into history to get information about introduction of Arabic in Algeria. \ Then I have insisted on the co-existence between French and Arabic and different phenomena that result from this situation (code switching, diglossia …) \ In these papers, I focus on analyzing a given group of people, to deduce which language is more spoken (AA or French) in the Algerian society.
