المستخلص: The archaeology of the southern Sudan is notoriously weak and the region until recently was in archaeological terms “terra icognita” and hence its archaeological heritage still remains little known. This is due to the meager work having been done-sofar- in this region in comparison with the north. The result is that the ancient history of the South is poorly known and has been mainly relied upon slender historical sources and oral traditions. Nevertheless, some archaeological discoveries have brought to light information revealing that Man has continuously inhabited the southern Sudan since prehistoric era. Future research necessitates the preparation of national competent cadres for running tasks of surveys and excavations. Pilot-archaeological mapping and selected sites spanning the whole cultural stages of the far-flung parts of the South is the prime objective of exploration by the department of Archaeology of Juba University. \
