Butana region received a special attention by the Meroitic kings since the initial beginning of the kingdom. The reasons behind this stem from the fact that it had a strategic position facilitating the flow of trade. In addition to that, it was characterized by notable richness in animal and agricultural wealth concomitant with sufficient incidence of rains. The Meroitic kings managed to exploit all these resources of the Butana and established their political , religious and commercial centres (palaces, temples and trade stations) in this district. To expand and reinforce their settlements, a series of artificial reservoirs (hafirs) were dug presumably for water- storage that could be utilized for herds grazing and farming irrigation.
