فإن الهدف من هذا البحث هو عرض موقف أهل السنة والجماعة (السلف) من العقل وذلك من حيث مفهومه، ومكانته، وخصائصه لديهم، فكان ملخص موقفهم على النحو التالي: أولاً: إن مفهوم العقل عند أهل السنة يشمل الأمور الضرورية الفطرية في الإنسان؛كمعرفة الإنسان أن الكل أكبر من الجزء. كما يشمل العلم النظري الاكتسابي، والعمل بالعلم. ثانياً: إن للعقل عند أهل السنة مكانته المحفوظة؛ والمتمثلة في أنه مصدر في قضايا المعرفة العامة وهو حجة في هذا المجال، أما في الدين فهو دليل معتبر، مهمته الفهم والاستنباط لما ورد في الدين وإيراد الحج المؤيدة لما أثبته أو نفاه الدين الحنيف. ثالثاً: إن للعقل خصائص عديدة من أبرزها: الاعتماد على البديهيات، في نظره، واستدلاله، ونقده. الجمع بين الأمور المؤتلفة في الحكم، والتفريق بين الأمور المختلفة في الحكم. القدرة على التحسين والتقبيح العقلي؛ فالعقل يميز بين ما ينفعه فيطلبه وبين ما يضره فلا يأتيه، كما يستحسن إثابة المطيع ويقبح معاقبته. السلامة والوضوح في أدلته العقلية المركبة؛ فهي لا تناقض فيها، ولا تتناقض مع الواقع، قريبة الفهم للمتلقي. العمل بأصول العلوم التي لا تناقض الوحي؛ وعدم محالفته لها، لأن في ذلك حفظ للعلم والعقل معاً، والإخلال بذلك إخلال بهما. الاهتمام بما هو عملي. فهو لا يستحسن الاشتغال بما لا نفع فيه ولا ينبني عليه عمل، أو بما يستحيل وقوعه ونحو ذلك.
