تهدف الدراسة إلي إظهار أن ألبني الذي تم رسم صورته في طبعه عام 1623 يتسم بشخصية ضعيفة إلي حد ما، وأن صورته كرجل دولة لم تكن واضحة؛ حيث إنه كان ممزقا بين التزامه الأخلاقي تجاه الملك لير وواجباته تجاه الدولة، كما أنه كان مترددا في ولائه للقوي المتحالفة مع لييرلا ككوردليا وكينت، والقوي المعادية له ككونيرل وريغن وإدمند وفي طبعة عام 1608 بدا ألبني رجلا شريفا، ينتمي بولائه للدولة أولا وأخيرا، أما لير فقد بدا في طبعه عام 1623 أكثر قوة مما بدا عليه في طبعة عام 1608، وأكثر مقدرة علي استخدام سلطته بطريقة منفتحة، وطرح الأفكار المتعلقة بتقسيم مملكته، وإجراء اختبار لمدي حب الآخرين له، الأمر الذي جعل جمهور المشاهدين يبدون تعاطفا أكبر معه في خضم الأحداث المضطربة التي تبعت ذلك.
The main purpose of this study is to reveal that the character portrayal of Albany in the 1623 Folio of King Lear undergoes drastic changes from its early inception in the 1608 Quarto version. The Albany that is portrayed in the Folio version is a relatively weak figure, vaguely drawn as a State man who is tom between his moral obligations to Lear and his duties to the State, and is hesitant in his allegiance to Lear and his supporting forces, namely,' Kent and Cordilia, over Lear’s opposing forces, i.e., Goneril, Edmund and Regan. However, in the Quarto version, Albany is shown as an honorable man whose duty lies first and foremost with the State. The study also illustrates how Lear is similarly depicted differently in each version of the play. In the Folio version, Lear displays a strength of character that is quite missing in the earlier Quarto version. Not only does the king wield his power more openly in the Folio version, but he also foregrounds his motives for dividing his Kingdome and conducting the love test, which allows the audience to be more sympathetic toward him throughout the chaos that ensues.
