أهمية البريد لا يمكن إغفالها في عصر ما، لأنه يأتي بالأخبار حسنها وسيئها، وانقطاعه يعني اضطراب مراسلات الدولة الداخلية والخارجية، ويخلق الفوضى الإدارية في أرجائها. من هنا اهتمت الحضارات منذ القدم بأمر البريد وأحكمت نظامه وصولاً للغايات المنشودة منه. وسلطنة المماليك التي طال عمرها لابد أنها استخدمت البريد استخداماً لافتاً، بحيث ضمن لها البقاء المديد، والباحث في مصادر العصر المملوكي يرى حرص المؤرخين على ذكر وتتبع الأخبار التي تصل من خلال البريد لشتى أنحاء السلطنة، فضلاً عن بقية رجاء المعمورة، كما يلحظ كثرة الألفاظ الإصطلاحية المتعلقة بالبريد ونظامه. لذا فإن تتبع أحوال البريد ونظامه، ورصد الألفاظ الإصطلاحية المتعلقة بالبريد ثم شرحها، يستحق البحث والدراسة، ويسهم في تجلية أحد عناصر الحياة الإدارية في هذا العصر.
Mail caries both good and bad news; therefore, in any era, its importance cannot be bypassed. Stoppage of mail disturbs the nation’s local and international correspondences. It also creates a state of chaos in nation’s administration. Thus, mail was of a great concern to civilization through the course of history. They systemized it in a way to meet up with the goals sought. Mameluke Sultanate that stood up for a long time might have used mail in a noticeable way, and so guaranteed the Sultanate long-lasting domination. A researcher who looks into the Mameluke era sources finds that historians were keen on mentioning and tracking down the news received all over the Sultanate by mail. Another thing the researcher notes is the cornucopia of terminologies related to mail and its system. Accordingly, recoding mail terminologies and explaining them along with tracing down the status of mail and its system are worth studying and researching. It contributes in introducing one of the elements of management life of this era.
