The research represents a review of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. It aims at elucidating the steps towards reaching a better understanding of the truth as well as the main characteristics of the process of Gadamer’s understanding. In his massive book, Truth and Method (1960), Gadamer argues that history, of both the reader and writer, is the principal vehicle of a consistent understanding of the truth. An individual’s perception of the past is essential to reach a proper understanding of his present. Hence, Gadamer’s hermeneutics is all about reaching a better understanding of the self and the other. In a literary context, Gadamer elucidates how a reader’s awareness and beliefs are incessantly modified throughout the process of reading; he refers to this process as the reversal of consciousness. Furthermore, Gadamer distinguishes between the understanding of the truth content and the understanding of intentions, or the knowledge of conditions. Gadamer describes language as the sphere dominating the whole process of human understanding. Philosophical hermeneutics is in effect characterized by its universality as it tackles the human quest for understanding.
