1- هدف البحث: التعرف على العوامل النفسية والاجتماعية المصاحبة للإصابة بمرض السرطان، ومحاولة وضع سياسة اجتماعية ونفسية لرعاية مرضى السرطان. 2- أهمية البحث: للدراسة أهميتين الأولى مجتمعية والثانية علمية فالأولى تتمثل في تأثير الإصابة بمرض السرطان على الحياة الأسرية والاجتماعية لمرضى السرطان كما يصاحبها تغيرات نفسية تؤثر على المريض بشكل أو بآخر، وهو ما يمثل أهمية في دراسة هذه المشكلة من منطلق الكشف عن هذه العوامل المصاحبة للإصابة بمرض السرطان مما يفيد منه مرضى السرطان والمحيطين به ويمكن أن يساعد على مواجهة المشكلات الاجتماعية والنفسية التي تحيط بمرضى السرطان. كما أن دراسة العوامل الاجتماعية والنفسية المصاحبة للإصابة بالسرطان تفيد التخصصات الاجتماعية والنفسية المعنية بالجانب الطبي، وهو ما يساعد على وضع تصور أو أسلوب للتعامل مع مرضى السرطان اجتماعيا ونفسيا. أما الأهمية العلمية، فتتمثل بدراسة العوامل الاجتماعية والنفسية المصاحبة لمرضى السرطان إضافة إلى التراث المعني بالصحة والمرض، وخاصة أن هذه الدراسة تدخل في مجال التخصصات البينية (الاجتماعية النفسية). منهجية البحث: اعتمد البحث على منهج المسح بالعينة أما أداة البحث فتمثلت بالاعتماد على استمارة الاستبيان كأداة رئيسية للبحث. متضمنا (49) سؤالا بعضها بيانات أساسية والأخرى خاصة بموضوع البحث الأساسي. أما عينة الدراسة فقد بلغ حجمها (200) مفردة موزعة على أساس الخلفية الثقافية (حضرية- ريفية) إذ بلغ عدد الحضريين (120) والريقيين (80). وقد أجري البحث في مركز العلاج الكيميائي بمستشفى الدمرداش بمحافظة القاهرة. وتوصل البحث إلى نتائج مهمة بينت أثر العوامل النفسية والاجتماعية في الأمراض السرطانية ما بين ضرورة الانتباه إلى ذلك من قبل المعنيين من دولة ومؤسسات ومواطنيين.
