المستخلص: دعت الدراسة إلى إعادة قراءة الألفاظ التي اتفق نقاد العرب القدماء على وحشيتها وغرابتها وقبحها قراءة برغماتية مقامية – خاصة أنها صادرة من أفواه العرب الفصحاء ومن أفواه شعراء كبار عظام – لأنها وجدت فيها معاني ورؤى وصوراً وأحوالاً وهيئات جميلة تقع في قلب سامعها وعقله، وتصل به إلى أبعاد خيالية ما كان ليبلغها دون أصوات هذه الألفاظ ومعانيها. فالمتكلم أو الشاعر قد يستعمل الوحشي الغريب القبيح من الألفاظ فيكون موقعه مستلذاً من النفوس لحسن المحاكاة والتخييل. فخرجت الدراسة بأن ما تثيره أصوات اللفظة وما تستدعيه من معان وما تحاكيه فينا من صور وتخيلات وتأملات في مقام مخصوص، معيار من معايير المفاضلة بين الألفاظ الوحشية الغريبة.

This study endeavors to apply a thorough pragmatic reading of the words that old Arabic critics classified as odd and ruthless. Those unusual or ruthless words were used by great and eloquent Arab poets for rhetorical purposes; they could see in these kinds of words and their unique clusters of sound an effective means to carry their visions, create their new images and convey the impact intended on the minds and hearts of the reader. This study therefore attempts to show that the use of unusual or ruthless words with their unique sounds, provided that they were carefully and successfully chosen in a particular contextual situation, can create a pleasant and different intended response on the part of readership. Such approach of pragmatic reading when examining words is considered a new criterion upon which words could be compared, judged and understood. The pragmatic reading in this study refers to the relation between language and context – as a new level of language interpretation. Understanding the meaning of a word goes beyond its collocational meaning in an utterance or structure, its sounds, or if it is beautiful or ruthless. In other words, to grasp the meaning of a word means closely examine the reciprocal relation between the ruthless,odd words and the context in which it was used.
