This paper sought to investigate the English language acquisition in Libyan schools through vocabulary development. Specifically, this investigation aims to determine the level of learner-based factors that Libyan students possess such as: a) self-concept; b) attitude towards English language; and c) language learning styles. The findings of this study are used to see if there is a significant relationship between the learner-based factors and vocabulary development in the Libyan school setting. A descriptive- correlational research design is used to analyze the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. To answer the research questions, substantial data are obtained through the use of validated survey questionnaires and vocabulary tests. The respondents in this study are twenty first year college Libyan students. Data analysis and interpretation through the use of T-test for Equality of Means One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was utilized to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the independent variables and dependent variables. Results in this investigation revealed that the respondents have low self- concept and poor learning styles due to their socio-cultural background. On the other hand, they are aware that a positive attitude towards English language will lead to their academic success. This new discovery is expected to be used as bases in the design and development of teaching curricula specifically for English language teaching and learning in Libyan schools.
