En Italie la recherche criminologique a été dès le début associée à la médecine, prolongement d’une tradition clinique qui remonte à Cesare Lombroso. Mais la complexité du phénomène étudié, la révolution épistémologique et l’introduction de la méthode positive et expérimentale dans l’étude du criminel n’ont pas suffi pour éclairer certains médecins qui ont préféré sombrer dans la caricature et la stigmatisation, en négligeant complètement les facteurs sociaux de l’action criminelle et en instrumentalisant la fonction traditionnelle de science et de connaissance pour des objectifs eugénistes et racistes. In Italy, criminological research has been associated from the start with medicine, an extension of a clinical tradition that dates back to Cesare Lombroso. But the complexity of the phenomenon studied, the epistemological revolution and the introduction of the positive and experimental method in the study of the criminal were not enough to shed light on certain doctors who preferred to support caricature and stigmatization, completely neglecting the social factors of criminal action and by exploiting the traditional function of science and knowledge for eugenic and racist purposes.
