المستخلص: ظهر علم الاجتماع البيئة كحاجة موضوعية ليبحث في أحوال البيئة الطبيعية ومجموعات النباتات أو الحيوانات التي تعيش فيها، وطبيعة العلاقة بينها وبين الكائنات الحية الموجودة فيها، كما أن علم البيئة يبحث في الأفراد والجماعات والمجتمعات والأنظمة البيئية، لذلك ظهرت الحاجة لظهور علم اجتماع البيئة لإكمال تلك العلاقات.
ونشأت الحاجة إلى علم الاجتماع البيئي نتيجة للتغيرات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية والمشكلات البيئية الملحة في عالم اليوم، والحاجة الماسة إلى إقرار علاقة متوازنة بين الإنسان والبيئة، وبالرغم من أن هذا الميدان قد يبدو جديداً على البحث السوسيولوجي، حيث لم يستخدم مصطلح علم الاجتماع البيئي إلا منذ عقد من الزمان تقريباً، إلا أن علم الاجتماع يتضمن في بنائه كنظام معرفي ومنذ نشأته المحددات البيئية.
نظراً للاهتمام العالمي بعلم الاجتماع البيئي، أصبحت الحاجة ماسة إلى التعرّف على الأسس والأطر النظرية الموجهة للبحوث والدراسات الاجتماعية في مجال علم الاجتماع البيئي

Environmental social science emerged as an objective need, to study the conditions of the natural environment and the groups of plants and animals living within it, and the nature of the relationship between them and between the living organisms existing within them. Environmental science also investigates individuals, groups, societies and ecosystems. For that reason, the need arose for the emergence of a science of the environment to complete those relationships.
The need arose for the environmental social science as a result of the technological and social changes, the urgent environmental problems in today’s world and due to the dire need to determine a balanced relationship between the human and the environment. Although this field could appear to be new to sociological research, in the case where the terminology of environmental social science had not been used until a decade ago, social science nevertheless has included in its structure, as a cognitive system, and since its inception, environmental determinants.
Due to the global importance of environmental social science, there has come to be an urgent need to become aware of its bases, the theoretical frameworks directing its research and the social studies, within the field of environmental social science.
