|b For pedagogical purposes, the present investigation adopts a genre-based contrastive rhetoric ESP approach to postulate a rhetorical move schema for the biological research paper Methods section and to answer the question of whether the posited move structure applies across Arabic, Arab-English, French, and English academic texts. Broadly speaking, the proposed three- move schema seems to apply cross-culturally with little variation relative to the actual use, ordering or cycling of the major categories across the four Methods samples. This is in clear contrast with our findings concerning the Introduction section (Benkhedda, 2002) where it was shown that significant cultural variation did exist among the four samples. The few instances of cross- cultural variation found in the present corpus indicate that the American authors, unlike the Arab and, to a lesser extent, the French authors, seem to operate in more complex discourse communities characterized by fierce competition, and therefore more rhetorical effort.
