|b Agrammatism is an acquired language disorder resulting from left hemisphere brain damage; characterised by slow and halting speech, reduction of phrase length and of syntactic complexity. Traditionally, agrammatism has been defined as production disorder which mainly affects function words and free-standing functional while content words remain intact. Agrammatic production is often characterized as 'telegraphic speech' consisting mainly of content words and frequent omissions of grammatically required bound and free functional morphemes. In recent years, however, much research has shown that agrammatic patients also have specific comprehension problems. The aim of this paper is to outline processing studies of agrammatic aphasia. However before that, a few words about the clinical features of agrammatism are in order.
