تناول البحث الكلام عن دلالة المشترك عند الأصوليين من حيث تعريفه والفرق بينه وبين المصطلحات المشابهة مثل العام والخفي، وكذلك أسباب الاشتراك وأقسام المشترك كما تطرق البحث إلى ذكر نماذج من الكتاب والسنة تدل على الاشتراك ولما كان المشترك من الألفاظ التي تدل على أكثر من معني من غير رجحان في أحدها احتاج إلى دليل من خارج النص لترجيح واحد من المعاني لذا اهتم البحث في التطرق لآراء الفقهاء في بعض المسائل التي اختلف فيها الفقهاء بناء على دلالة اللفظ المشترك ومن حيث ترجيح ما تبين رجحانه مع بيان ثمرة الخلاف.
