تناقش هذه الدراسة السياق الفلسطيني لنشوء حركة "مقاطعة إسرائيل وسحب الاستثمارات منها وفرض العقوبات عليها" (BDS)، إذ ثمة افتراضات أن الحركة ذات منشأ أوروبي وأميركي، الأمر الذي يتلاقى مع توجهات سياسية ونظرية تولي دول الشمال أولوية في إحداث التغيير محلياً. وتجادل الدراسة أنه وإن كان للشمال دور، فإنه لا يمكن فهم الحركة من دون التركيز على نشأتها الفلسطينية، فتتناول تفاعلات الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الثانية في المجتمع الفلسطيني وخارجه، وتأثيرها في تبلور حركة المقاطعة، وتناقش طبيعة الأطراف الفلسطينية التي دفعت نحو تشكل الحركة: من هي، ولماذا كانت هذه الأطراف هي الأكثر اندفاعاً لحركة المقاطعة، وما تأثير ذلك في المقاطعة؟ وتنتهي بسؤال عن ارتباط السياق الفلسطيني بسياقات إقليمية وعالمية للحركة.
This study discusses the Palestinian context for the emergence of the "Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement" (BDS), as there are assumptions that the movement is of European and American origin, which converges with political orientations and the theory that northern countries give priority to bringing about change locally. The study argues that although the North has a role, it is not possible to understand the movement without focusing on its Palestinian origin. It deals with the interactions of the second Palestinian intifada in and outside Palestinian society and its impact on the crystallization of the boycott movement, and discusses the nature of the Palestinian parties that pushed towards the formation of the movement: Who are they, and why were these parties most motivated by the boycott movement, and what impact did this have on the boycott?
