أدرك الباحثون قيمة الكتب الجغرافية فبحثوا عن مخطوطاتها وحققوها لتتحقق منها الفائدة، ومن هذه الكتب كتاب (أوضح المسالك إلى معرفة البلدان والممالك) لمحمد بن علي البروسوي الشهير بابن سباهي زاده ت 997 هـ/ 1589م والذي سار فيه على ترتيب مادته على حروف المعجم، وما التقطه من مصنفات المحققين، وما أستنبطه من مؤلفات المدققين وفرغ من تألفه في 13 رجب سنة 980هـ/ 1572 م وأهداه إلي السلطان العثمان مراد خان الثالث ابن السلطان سليم الثاني ثم نقله إلي التركية باختصار. وهذا الكتاب يضم وصف العديد من المدن والقرى ومنها خراسان الفارسية القديمة، ومعناها (البلاد الشرقية) وكان تنقسم في أيام حكم العرب إلي أربعة أرباع، نسب كل ربع إلي إحدى المدن الأربع الكبرى التي كانت في أوقات مختلفة، عواصم للإقليم بصورة منفردة أو مجتمعة وهذه الأرباع هي نيسابور، ومرو، وهراة وبلخ. وفى هذا البحث استقصاء لما ورد بذلك الكتاب من أسماء مدن وقرى خراسان وفق الاعتماد على تحقيق أسمائها ومواقعها وأوصافها التي وردت في كتب البلدان ودراستها وبيان ما تتصف به من طبيعة الأرض والعمران وغيرها.
