|b This paper reviews the traditional analyses of the ways through which humor is rendered. It focuses on a variety of intrinsic deviances, incongruities, and ambiguities that constitute the humorous act at linguistic microstructures. This will be done while considering sample humorous anecdotes across a variety of contexts including the canned joke, puns, irony, and other forms of humor across a variety of textual genres. Linguistic sources of humor can be found on the planes of phonology, morphology, lexis, syntax, and semantics. As Walter Nash (1985) has put it: \ The language of humor has to draw on the patterns and implications of phonology, morphology, of syntactic structure, of lexical form, of semantic field. We can therefore study it quite conventionally, as other kinds of discourse are studied, at different levels of linguistic organization, and in doing so we may observe how humorous language shares a characteristic of poetic language.
