المستخلص: Algeria is one of those countries that are still suffering from the issue of illiteracy that impedes the foundation of a community on a right and intact basis, in spite of the attempts that have been made to eliminate it. This can be done through imposing an obligatory education for free, and the establishment of the National Centre for Literacy and the National Office for Literacy and Adult Education. So the aim behind putting an end to such problem is not learning how to read and write, but it is indeed to make them active persons in the community. This leads us to state that the process of rehabilitation of such individuals aims at supplying them with the necessary skills that may help them to be easily integrated into the society. So, any process of a successful education should base on four significant elements: the teacher, the learner, the method and the program. Therefore, the rehabilitation of the illiterates requires the provision of a perfect teacher aware of their characteristics, and the selection of suitable methods and programs having a direct link with the daily life. However, there is a variety of teaching methods in Algeria; there are some teachers who rely on the programs designed by the ministry of education, because they believe they are od and appropriate for beginners, whereas others view them as meaningless educational programs that don’t attract the learner’s attention as they may also exceed their evels. In general, one could say that most of teachers select their own syllabi according to their learners’ academic ranks. With regard to the material used in teaching, there are some who use images or videos of conversation when explaining the lessons, especially in oral expression, and there are other teachers who use gestures and dialogues. However, the learning process of an adult illiterate is quite different of the young one. Most of learners, after three years of study, become able to control their reading and writing mechanisms according to the abilities and learning conditions of each one. So, illiteracy remains a dangerous phenomenon having a negative impact on the individual, the society and the nation as well. This problem should be solved through different studies and researches made at the national and international levels, by the adoption of a continuous assessment at the beginning and the end of each lesson, and also by the selection of suitable subjects to be discussed, taking into consideration both the technical and aesthetic aspects within the frame of research and study.
