إن الكلام العربي كلام مؤتلف ترتبط أجزاؤه برباط المعنى، وعلى أساس المعنى قامت نظرية العمل النحوي، والأفعال هي الأصل في العمل في هذه النظرية، والمعنى اللغوي للأفعال هو الأساس الذي يميز بينها في الدلالة والعمل، وعلى أساسه كانت الأفعال تامة وناقصة، ومتعدية ولازمة، وعلى أساسه أيضاً تعددت مفاعيلها. وهذا البحث يبرز العلاقة الوطيدة بين معنى الفعل وعمله في التركيب، وقد تبين فيه بوضوح أثر معنى الفعل في عمله النحوي، وقد جاءت مادته موزعة على ثلاثة مباحث، بينت في الأول أثر المعنى اللغوي في نقص الأفعال وتمامها، وفي الثاني أثر المعنى اللغوي في تعدي الأفعال ولزومها، وفي الثالث أثر المعنى اللغوي في تعدد المفاعيل، ومهدت لكل ذلك ببيان الأسباب التي أوجبت تنوع المعنى للفعل الواحد.
