نشأت المدن الإيونية في ساحل آسيا الصغرى كنتيجة لحركة الاستعمار الإغريقي الكُبرى خلال القرنين الثامن والسادس ق. م، وقد حدثت هذه الحركة نتيجة لعدة عوامل منها الطبيعة الطاردة لبلاد الإغريق الفقيرة من حيث المياه والأراضي الزراعية، فقد طغت عليها المرتفعات الجبلية التي حالت دون وحدة البلاد والتي كان سببا رئيسا في ظهور ما يُعرف بالمدينة الدولة، ومن بين الأسباب التي أدت إلى هذه الهجرات الغزو الدوري الذي اجتاح بلاد الاغريق ما دفع بالسكان الأصليين إلي الهجرة خارج بلادهم، ومما ساعد على سهولة هذه الحركة، ضعف دول الشرق الأدنى القديم، فقد سقطت الدولة الحيثية التي كانت مُسيطرة علي آسيا الصُغرى، وانكمش النفوذ المصري نتيجة للتهديد الآشوري الذي سيطر كذلك علي الساحل الفينيقي ما قلل من نفوذ الفينيقيين في البحر المتوسط، ونتيجة لهذه الحركة تأسست العديد من المدن وكانت أغلبها علي الساحل الأيوني، وكانت هذه المدن مستقلة تماما عن المدن المؤسسة لها، بيد انها لم تنعم بحريتها إذ إنها سقطت تحت النفوذ الليدي الذي استطاع اخضاعها بالقوة تارة وبالحيلة تارة أُخرى، وبعد تعاظم نفوذ الدولة الميدية، بدأت تتجه أنظارها إلى دولة ليديا التي ما لبثت أن خضعت لها ومعها مدن الساحل الأيوني، وبعد سيطرة الفرس الأخمينيين على أشقائهم الميدين انتقلت المدن الإيونية إلى سيطرتهم نتيجة لسياسة الملك الفارسي قورش الذي تحالف مع بابل قبل أن يسيطر عليها عام 539 ق. م وسيطر على قبرص وأصبح يهدد المدن الإيونية التي ما لبثت أن دخلت تحت حكمه.
