Women are usually cautious to sell old jewelry first in return for obtaining cash value on the spot from the jeweler. Afterwards, they buy new jewelry based on the cash value they obtained from selling old ones. This research presents a thorough study dedicated to answer the frequently asked questions that women propose upon exchanging or selling old pieces of jewelry. On the other hand, women frequently ask whether it is permissible in the Shari’ah to follow the above-mentioned manner in selling jewelry or to exchange equivalent pieces of jewelry at an equal rate or at an unequal rate of exchange for the sake of fashioning new jewelry. They wonder whether or not the previously mentioned transaction is considered a form of riba [usury] prohibited by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mentioned in the hadith narrated by Bilal, ‘Ubadah ibn As-Samit and Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may God be pleased with them)? This paper answers all of these questions following a comprehensive methodology that covers all the related points.
