| 520 | |b This research aims at studying the image of the Other (the Orient) in Irish orientalism and its reflection or appliance in James Joyce’s short story Araby (1914) and novel Ulysses (1922). Exploring this image comes from a necessity to know whether Joyce’s use of the image of the Other, the Orient, has the same tendency or need of the Irish or not. Moreover, the research focuses on recognizing the aspects of this image, to know if it is a positive or negative one, and to find out whether it is similar or opposite to the Irish identity or not. So, the reasons and intentions behind this modem literary style of writing, Orientalism, are tackled thoroughly. Therefore, the introduction of the research starts with the meaning of orientalism in general and then with that of Irish and Joyce an in particular. Then, The texts that contain the clear and direct references to the East or the Orient are discussed and analyzed. In addition to that, certain critical opinions relevant to the texts and the themes behind them are mentioned throughout the research. A conclusion of a good outcome and opinions comes finally. | ||
